What do you do with all that screenshots?

Posted in Tech, Thoughts by Mythokia on January 12th, 2008

I’ve been trying to be a bit more organized recently, sorting out my the huge mess that is my digital storage, and clearing out a years worth of the stuff in the folder labeled ‘Incoming’. As the name suggests, is where every file coming in to my computer is stored, regardless of their source. This includes random stuff I copy from my laptop over to view temporarily, files downloaded from the Internet, more random bits of files I get sent over MSN and so on. If my mom could visualize my incoming folder as my room, she’ll go ape. It is that bad.

One thing I’ve always had problems sorting out is my screenshots folder from whatever game I’m playing. I’ve the tendency to take a lot of random screenshots, but never go through the process of sorting them. My question to you readers are: how do you organize them screenshots? Do you rename them? (not that my uncreative naming conventions for my L2 screenshots of “lol1v1.jpg”, “lolraped.jpg”, “omglololol.jpg” help me in anyway) Put them in different folders? Or do you make use of some photo album program to organize and tag them (Flickr comes to mind)?

Funny that you should bring this up. I recently noticed that I have over 1,000 EQ2 screen shots alone. I have screen shots for every game, but a surplus of EQ2 since I post pretty much every day about it. My folder actually takes a minute or two to open, it’s that big.

I do use flickr, but an upgraded account would be most beneficial. That way I can organize them by huge batches. Of course, I still enjoy having them on my computer too, but what happens if something fries, then I’ve lost all those screen shots.

Anyhow. I haven’t decided on the final method of organizing them all right now. I have them organized by game - and that’s about it, the rest are just in numerical order. Then I also have one huge folder that has all the screen shot folders (by game) in it. Other folders for things like my photoshop projects (since they’re saved as a different type of file) and blog stuff (like the layout and what not) etc etc….

I was thinking about paying for a Flickr pro account while keeping a backup on my computer too, which is what I’ll probably end up doing.

I’m also looking to backup other stuff like music remotely too just incase something happens while I’m away in the military. Got rather paranoid about this all of a sudden.

I had a lot of dupes saved over the years, so what I did is write a hash program that would create a hash for the files and then copy them into one folder — this would eliminate dupes, as regardless what their file names were, identical pictures would have identical hashes and thus overwrite each other. Then I sorted the pictures by hand into EQ1 Classic, EQ1, EQ2, DAoC, FFXI, WoW and so on.

EQ1 Classic is my word for EQ1 up until I joined a raid guild and the game changed for me.
